Freedom 251 smartphone costs less than $4 in 2016

A few months back, Walmart was selling an Android smartphone for less than 10 bucks. Crazy cheap, right? Not compared to the new Freedom 251 that just went on sale in India.
It’s being offered by a company called Ringing Bells, and they’ve priced it at around $3.66 (Rs. 251). That might look like the price for a contract phone, but it’s not. The Freedom 251 is available for outright purchase for roughly the same price as a Happy Meal from McDonalds here in the US. No, you don’t get top-notch hardware for that kind of money. The Freedom 251 features a 4-inch qHD display, a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage. It has both front (.3mp) and rear (3.2mp) cameras, a 1450mAh battery, and it runs Android 5.1.
Even with specs like those, it’s pretty clear that someone (likely the Indian government) is subsidizing the Freedom 251 to get the price down that low.Gadgets 360 was sent an early version of the device and it had an Adcom logo on the front and looked an awful lot like an iPhone — the icons have even been given the iOS treatment.
That makes it appear as though the Freedom 251 may be a slightly modified Adcom Ikon 4, a phone that currently sells for around $60 in India, or their A400 which sells for about $30 — or possibly a hybrid of the two. Whatever the case may be, it’s clearly intended to be a device aimed at getting more Indians connected. Priced at roughly one days’ wages, the Freedom 251 will certainly do that.
